What Is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)?
A practical, evidence-based approach to change the patterns that keep you stuck.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, usually called CBT, is a practical and collaborative form of psychotherapy. It is based on a straightforward idea: the way you interpret a situation affects how you feel and what you do, and your behavior can then reinforce the same thoughts and emotions.
Imagine that your manager sends a short message asking to speak with you. You may immediately think, “I have done something wrong” or “I am about to lose my job.” Anxiety rises, your body becomes tense and you spend the next hour reviewing every recent mistake. Another person may read the same message and think, “He probably needs an update.” The event is identical, but the interpretation changes the emotional response.
