What Is Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)?
Skills for the moments when emotion runs the show.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy, or DBT, is a structured approach that helps people manage intense emotions, survive difficult moments without making them worse and build healthier relationships. At its heart is a powerful balance: accepting yourself and your present reality while also working seriously to change what is not working.
This balance is the “dialectical” part of DBT. Two statements that seem opposite can both be true. You may be doing the best you can, and you may also need to learn new behavior. Your emotions may make complete sense in light of your history, and some of your reactions may still be damaging your life.
